Well what can I say? I enjoyed it. Had some great moments, the VFX + 3D was great and it's definitely a step up from the first film in terms of scale and visuals. However, there were some things I didn't like or bothered me a bit. First off, the pacing. It was all over the place. It goes from fast to slow to mediocre to somber. The transitions between each scene could have been much better. A lot of it had to do with the editing.
While Jamie Foxx was great as Electro, his scenes as Max Dillon was very underwhelming. I wouldn't blame Foxx for this. It was more of how the character was written. A lot of very corny lines. Foxx is a very talented actor and I really wanted to see him own the role. Sadly, that wasn't the case and his character was very under utilized. I do hope to see him back in a future installment. One thing that bothered me the most was Dane DeHaan as Harry Osborn, who I felt wasn't right for the role. I just found him to be very irritating and annoying. His character was very underdeveloped. We all know that Harry and Peter were childhood friends but all their scenes together never really showed that connection. Their friendship, or whatever history they had, was not believable at all. Harry's transition to becoming a villain was weak. His motives for wanting to kill Spider-Man was also weak. To be honest, I enjoyed James Franco's take as Harry Osborn in the original Sam Raimi directed trilogy. Throughout the course of 3 films he went from being a best friend hell-bent on avenging his father's death to a man who lost himself but was then redeemed. That to me was great character development. As a spectator, I cared very much for the character. Sadly for DeHaan's take in this reboot, I didn't care at all. Paul Giamatti as Rhino... Not needed! Should've saved him for the next one. All the screen time wasted on the Rhino could have been used to develop the other 2 villains. Haven't you learned from Spider-Man 3 yet? One of the best scenes, and my favorite scene of the entire film... I can't say! But it was both HEROIC and BITTERSWEET. The action was great. VFX + 3D was amazing. The pacing was all over the place. Some very underdeveloped characters. Overall I give The Amazing Spider-Man 2 a 3 out of 5.
